Well the weekend was filled with blow up uh mattresses, giggly girls, and late night pasta feeds. Ah, the life of a roadie.
The LoneStarWorks gals played a tough game this Tour of New Braunfels Weekend. Saturday was the 50 min crit and Sunday was the 48 mile road race near the outlet malls in San Marcos.
Saturday’s crit was the first race of the season, and it showed! One girl in front of me went off the road at least 3 times, that I saw, and kept rubbing tires with the girls in front of her. I even moved to the other side of the pack to get away from the “grinder” and sure enough, there she went, tires swerving and trying to take out half the field.
The crit was pretty sluggish at the start, and the pack moved the shuffle pace up to race pace the last 1.5 laps of the 2 mile loop. I guess that’s road racing for you. You can only go as fast as the pack wants to go…unless you want to take off by yourself and hope they chase you! The real excitment was the sprint at the end when we actually stood up on the bikes and rode out for the finish the last 30 sec of the race. Christina took first and I took 8th out of the 30 something girls racing.
Sunday was a different story. The girls seemed more awake now and our team had a game plan….attack from behind and make the girls work. Christina and I did a dual attack on the big climb, one from the left side and one from the right. It would have been a good idea had we known that there was nice downhill after the climb….My whole team did a great job of keeping it interesting. We just kept needling away at the pack to try and get a break away, and finally after I got off a pull at the front, the moment happened…they got away. Note to self: Do not pull for extended periods of time and then go to the very back of the pack becuase you are tired! If you see butts getting larger, you need to move up closer to the tiny hinny zone.
Christina, Tracie, and two other girls got in a break away and Tammy, Michelle and I were left to tend to the fold. C and T worked togehter and dropped the other 2 gals and ended up with a first and second place finish. Then it was onto the sheep herd finish. I knew that I didn’t want to do a pack sprint at the end, and decided to make my move early. I started my “mountain bike sprint” about 1 1/4 mi out from the finish so that the weaker girls would fall off the back. I had two good teammate sprinters with me so I led them out and LoneStarWorks ended up with a top 10 finish with our 5 girls. Not too shabby for some gals wearing men’s chamois!
Fave race moment: The pack was slowing down to incredible turtle speeds and Christina made the whip lash sound and bellowed deep and loud, “Hee yah come on girls!” The horsie trick seemed to work and the pack moved up.
